Closed-Cell vs. Open-Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation comes in two main types: closed-cell and open-cell. Both offer great insulation performance but differ in structure, application, and benefits.

Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation: Dense. Durable. High performance.

Closed-cell spray foam is a rigid, high-density insulation that forms a solid barrier. The tiny foam cells are completely closed and packed tightly together, which gives it strength and excellent thermal resistance.

Best for:
  • Pole barns & metal buildings
  • Garages & workshops
  • Foundations & basements
  • Roof decks or areas exposed to moisture
  • Anywhere you need maximum insulation and durability

Benefits:
  • Very high R-value (insulating power) per inch
  • Adds structural strength to walls and roofs
  • Moisture resistant – acts as a vapor barrier
  • Great for small, tight spaces or where space is limited
  • Helps reduce air leaks and improves energy efficiency

Keep in Mind:
  • Higher cost per square foot
  • Less flexible than open-cell foam
  • Not ideal for soundproofing
Open-Cell Spray Foam Insulation: Soft. Flexible. Affordable.

Open-cell spray foam
is a lighter, spongier material that expands more than closed-cell foam. Its cell structure allows air and moisture vapor to pass through, which makes it more breathable.

Best for:
  • Attics & ceilings
  • Interior walls
  • Sound dampening projects
  • Budget-conscious insulation upgrades

Benefits:
  • Lower cost per square foot
  • Excellent sound absorption
  • Expands easily into hard-to-reach areas
  • Great for insulating large spaces

Keep in Mind:
  • Lower R-value than closed-cell
  • Not a vapor barrier – may not suit wet or high-humidity areas
  • Softer material, not structural
